How to Choose the Right Wheelchair Seat Width
A simple, step-by-step guide to find your perfect fit — no guessing required.
Why Seat Width Matters
Choosing the right seat width is one of the most important decisions when picking a wheelchair. A seat that's too narrow feels cramped and uncomfortable. A seat that's too wide is unstable and hard to control.
The good news? Finding your ideal seat width is simple. It takes about 5 minutes and requires nothing more than a belt or measuring tape.
How to Measure Your Seat Width
Step 1: Gather Your Tools
You'll need one of the following:
- A belt
- A phone charging cable
- A soft measuring tape
- A piece of string
Why? These tools are flexible and easy to wrap around your hips while seated.
Step 2: Sit in Your Normal Position
Sit in a regular chair or couch in the way you normally sit. Relax. Don't sit stiffly or lean forward. This is how you'll be sitting in your wheelchair most of the time.
Step 3: Wrap Around Your Hips
While seated, wrap your belt or cable around your hips at the widest point. This is usually just above your hip bones. Mark or pinch where the belt meets itself.
Step 4: Measure the Length
Lay the belt flat on a table or floor. Measure it in inches from one end to your mark. Write down this number. This is your hip width.
Step 5: Add 2 Inches
Take your hip width measurement and add approximately 2 inches. This gives you room to sit comfortably without feeling squeezed.
Example: If your hip width is 20 inches, your ideal seat width is 22 inches.
Step 6: Match to a Wheelchair Model
Now that you know your ideal seat width, find a wheelchair that matches. Below are our three models and their seat widths.

Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Choosing a seat that's too narrow. This feels cramped and uncomfortable for long sitting sessions. Don't do it just because it seems "smaller" or cheaper.
- Choosing a seat that's too wide. This makes the wheelchair harder to control and maneuver, especially indoors.
- Measuring while standing. Always measure while seated in your normal, relaxed position. Your hip width changes when you sit.
- Forgetting the +2 inch rule. The 2-inch buffer is important. It prevents that "squeezed" feeling and allows for clothing.
- Guessing instead of measuring. Take 5 minutes to measure. It's worth it for comfort you'll use every day.
