Will Your Wheelchair Fit Through Your Doorway?
A practical guide to doorway fit and choosing the right wheelchair for your home.
The Doorway Problem
One of the biggest concerns when choosing a wheelchair is whether it will fit through your home's doorways. You don't want to buy a chair only to discover it's too wide to move between rooms.
The good news? Most standard U.S. interior doors are wide enough for heavy-duty wheelchairs. But you need to know your measurements.
Standard U.S. Doorway Widths
| Door Type | Opening Width | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Standard Interior Door | 28″ – 32″ | Most common in homes. Measure your actual opening. |
| Narrow Interior Door | 24″ – 28″ | Older homes or closets. Tight fit for wheelchairs. |
| Wide/Double Door | 32″ – 60″+ | Sliding glass doors, patio doors. No fit issues. |
| Hallway Width | 36″ – 48″ | Typically wider than doors. Easy to navigate. |
How to Measure Your Doorway
- Measure the opening width. Use a measuring tape to measure from the inside of one door frame to the inside of the other. Measure at the widest point.
- Write down the measurement. Note the exact width in inches.
- Add 2–3 inches for clearance. When moving a wheelchair through a doorway, you need extra space on each side. Subtract 4–6 inches from your doorway width to get your usable space.
- Match to wheelchair seat width. Your wheelchair seat width should be less than your usable doorway space.

Quick Decision: Which Model Fits Your Home?

My doorways are 28″–30″ wide, and I want comfort at home
→ Strongback Comfort 24 — Perfect fit with good clearance, comfort-focused design
-
My home is small with tight doorways, and I move room to room a lot
→ FLUX 360 Plus — Compact, easy to maneuver, fits all standard doorways
-
My doorways are 30″+ wide, and I want outdoor access

What If Your Doorway Is Too Narrow?
- Measure carefully. Some doorways look narrow but are actually 28″+ when measured properly. Measure multiple doorways in your home.
- Consider doorway modifications. Removing a door frame can add 1–2 inches. This is a common home modification for wheelchair accessibility.
- Choose the most compact model. FLUX 360 Plus is the narrowest option and fits through the tightest standard doorways.
- Prioritize your main use case. If you mostly stay in one room, doorway width is less critical. If you move between rooms constantly, compact size matters more.
